Salve and Lip Balm Recipes

Updated: Jun 23, 2021

Here are several salve and lip balm recipes from Heart of Herbs Herbal School, where I got my Aromatherapy certification.

Herbal Salve Recipes

Goddess Garden's Ray of Sun Goldenseal Salve

1/3 cup of olive or other vegetable oil

1/3 cup infused Plantain oil

1/3 cup infused Calendula oil

1/3-cup beeswax or other wax of choice.

1-tablespoon myrrh powder

5 tablespoons freshly-powdered Goldenseal

1 teaspoon Tea Tree Essential oil

Gently heat Olive oil and herbal oils in a double boiler. When hot, let cool. Three hours later, come back and strain, use fine cheesecloth, muslin, or unbleached coffee filter. This will take a while. In a double boiler, melt the beeswax. When the wax of choice is melted, add the infused oils, and allow the mixture to reheat. Then add the oil/herb mixture, strained. Then when all is liquid again, add the essential oils last, and ladle into little pots or a large container. Allow to cool and harden, then use.

When working with hot oils, use the utmost caution. Please be careful and follow double boiler instructions from a cookbook. Use and make with education and care.

Lip Balm Recipes

Lip Slick Lip Gloss

2 teaspoons beeswax

7 teaspoons castor oil or jojoba or sweet almond oil

 1 teaspoon honey

5 drops of essential oil such as lemon, peppermint, orange, lime, tangerine

Melt the oil and beeswax together in a little pan over low heat until the beeswax is melted. Use a double boiler to prevent burning the oils.

Remove from heat, and then add in your honey and whisk it all together. When the mixture is nearly cool, add in your essential oil, mix it up again, and then spoon into your lip balm containers.

Since this comes out to be more like a gloss, you can always add more beeswax to it so that it is a little more like a lip balm. Maybe another 1/2 tsp would do it.

Soothing Healing Lip Balm

2 tablespoons Coconut Oil

1 tablespoon Flax Seed Oil

¼ cup Sweet Almond Oil

2 tablespoons Beeswax

10 drops Peppermint Essential oil.

Luscious Lip Balm

3 tablespoons Coconut oil

2 tablespoons Shea Butter

1 tablespoon Almond Oil

1 teaspoon Castor Oil

1 tablespoon Beeswax

10 drops Peppermint Essential oil, Sweet Orange Essential Oil or other essential oil.

Warm the oils, and add essential oils after you have taken off the burner.

Add to the lip balm tubes or tub.
